i. my take on hinata is post-war and is canon divergent.
with her background, the war has ended and as their village strives for normalcy, hinata ends up suffering from ptsd, depression, and anxiety while in the midst of trying to accept everything that's happened.
there is a lot of guilt surrounding neji’s death, so in verse: AFTERMATH, she becomes a recluse, trying to deal with her feelings surrounding everything and everyone who seem to be moving forward as she remains stagnant. although she has moments of hope, there are moments where she falls &falls hard. hiashi asks hinata to help lead the merging of the main branch &side branch, which she reluctantly accepts, knowing her younger sister is the rightful heir to the clan. however, it was both her and neji’s bond that may have opened hiashi’s eyes to the idea that the two can be one, he believes hinata has proven herself to be the type of leader the hyuuga clan needs right now:
benevolent, compassionate and kind.

ii. after the war, hinata gradually lets go of her one-sided affections for naruto, mainly due to following a different path than she had expected, causing a shift in her feelings. nothing is said after pain’s attack—the moment she confesses her love—and nothing is said outside of neji’s death. naruto comforted her when she needed it the most; for that she is grateful. however, both hinata and naruto are teenagers who both don’t know what love is. given that she projected her feelings onto naruto (someone who is similar to her; someone who is a light in her dark), it’s easy to see how she became infatuated with him from a young age. yes, he is the source of her motivation in wanting to be a better person and shinobi; however, naruto is still naruto. his fixation for finding sasuke, for training, for being a pillar of hope for the village—it’s a lot for a teenager to deal with.in hinata’s eyes, it makes sense. so even with the lack of response after everything has happened, she silently takes it upon herself to part ways from naruto romantically. to her, they’re still friends and comrades. is it awkward sometimes? sure, for her sometimes, but at the end of the day, she will continue to treat him with respect and kindness, just as she always has.( the only naruto i’ve had these conversations with are baka-naruto, so they’ve had history in our canon. however with other naruto’s, post-war, she will not act romantically towards them. pre-war &genin years, she does still have feelings for him. if this at all makes you uncomfortable, please let me know! she’s subtle, but of course, naruto is oblivious to her—she won’t take it to heart. if you’d like to discuss their friendship or relationships forward, DM for any questions. )

iii. here, hinata is the one that becomes heiress. this is subject to change, as i can follow an AU where she decides to cut off ties with the hyuuga clan, thus relinquishing the title back to hanabi and fulfilling her own dreams of staying faithful to the kunoichi lifestyle, or something else entirely different. the only reason as though she can be leader (despite hiashi’s doubts about her for the longest time) is because she has seen the perspective through neji’s eyes & has felt that brand of being unwanted and unsuitable.
however, she’s able to show how much she’s changed and how the ideals of the hyuuga’s destiny is finalized. hinata ultimately wants to unite both main + branch families and either brand themselves altogether or to disband the curse mark seal from every being used on anyone again.
